Emily Harger is a video producer and photographer based in Oakland, CA. Her roots in Appalachian Pennsylvania drive her curiosity for the American identity across rural and urban communities. She travels between the west coast and her home region regularly for stories.
Emily also teaches video and photo classes at Youth Beat in Oakland, CA. Her students are incredibly talented and constantly inspire her to make stronger visual work. This past year, Emily was one of three filmmaking residents with Glassbreaker Films, an all women-identifying film studio of The Center for Investigative Reporting. She is currently in production for a documentary short funded through a Glassbreaker Films grant.
Her work has been published through The Center for Investigative Reporting, 100 Days in Appalachia, The Bitter Southerner, The Atlantic, Kertis Creative, Bloomberg, Narratively, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, WOUB Public Media, among others. She has been recognized by College Photographer of the Year and the Hearst Journalism Awards.
